Proceedings

SSHM Proceedings have been produced since the foundation of the Society in 1948. Material consists primarily of papers presented to the society, together with brief summaries of Annual General Meetings. Between 1948 and 1970 the Proceedings were published by the Society, but with increasing difficulty in funding, publication between 1970 and 1986 was limited to increasingly brief Annual Reports, published in Medical History.

Following a generous bequest from the Society’s founder, Dr Douglas Guthrie, the Society resumed the publishing of Proceedings in 1990. The first two issues of the extended Proceedings (1984-1985, and 1985-86) were published as single volumes. Since then, successive volumes have covered two years at a time.

To be published in the Proceedings, a paper must have been presented at a SSHM meeting. Many papers are published in full, with references and illustrations, while others may be summarised. Where a paper has already been published, a link to the publication will normally be provided.

All issues up to and including that for 2014-16 were printed as paper copies, but since then the Proceedings only appear in pdf form, on the old SSHM website. The pdfs will be moved to this site, accompanied by accessible, searchable Word documents, over the next few months.
